A doctor with dual Saudi-American citizenship who was imprisoned and reportedly tortured in Saudi Arabia for 21 months has been released to his family.
Saudi authorities allowed Dr. Walid Fitaihi to return to his home in Jidda on Wednesday night, sources close to Fitaihi’s family told the New York Times. Saudi Arabia held Fitaihi, who earned his license to practice medicine in Boston, for nearly two years for reasons that remain unclear.
The terms of Fitaihi’s release are also unclear.
Saudi Arabia arrested Fitaihi amid a crackdown on political opponents and critics of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The crown prince’s regime is engaged in a large-scale crackdown on intellectuals, politicians, businessmen, and activists, in what the government has billed as an anti-corruption operation.
While most of those arrested during the regime’s operation were held for only several months before being released, Fitaihi’s sentence lasted much longer. Guards tortured Fitaihi with beatings and electrocution while he was held, according to Fitaihi’s son, Ahmed.
Saudi Arabia has denied Ahmed’s account of his father’s treatment.
